SILVERDALE—Seventh grade social studies teacher, DJ Sweet, had five of his classes work on a project called Pathway to Presidency. The project was about the delegates that a candidate was earning in the caucuses and primaries over the span of five months which began in January and ended in June. The students chose what political party they were most closely aligned with—either Republican or Democrat. They used a website that had all the dates about the Primaries and Caucuses and then used a google map to write where the primaries or caucuses were held. They also collected some information for subjects like science where they had to write the state animal or plant and a few details about them. While in language arts, they had to use literary terms in a sentence that was based on the state itself. “I believe that the Pathway to Presidency project was designed to let students study about their states and capitals,” said Mr. Sweet, “which is relevant.” Currently, the candidates that are running for the presidential election are Donald Trump who is a Republican, Bernie Sanders, and Hillary Clinton who are both Democrats. “Bernie Sanders is the one I support,” Kylie Deerwester said, “because he makes the most logical sense out of all the candidates.” By Tyler Wasnock
SILVERDALE--Students in Mrs. Robinson’s 8th grade Honors Washington State history class are mixing it up by teaching the class May 31st through June 10th. Each group has been assigned to a different chapter to teach the class with a variety of different activities. The students take their turns teaching the class including an introduction, content, collaboration, fun, and assessment as part of the chapter to gain knowledge on the lesson. Meanwhile, Mrs. Robinson assesses how well they taught the class as a teacher to the rest of the class and how hard they worked. The Student-led lessons have been a success to the classroom, and many of the students are enjoying the collaborative discussions and fun activities. “I’ve learned a lot from my fellow students and my favorite part of the class period is when we play a kahoot made by the groups,” says eighth grader Maggie Cole.
